The Practice

Kilmore Equine Clinic is situated on 2 acres, hospital facilities include a stable complex, day yards and well fenced paddocks. We have a large treatment room with a purpose built crush and farrier workshop. In addition we have well equipped surgical facilities with a padded knock-down/recovery box, hoist, hydraulic surgical table with gas anaesthesia and monitoring.

Our diagnostic equipment includes portable endoscope, ultrasound, radiography and local laboratory services.   


Our Team

The team of veterinarians, nurses and office staff are experienced in all aspects of the Australian horse industry. We are a highly motivated group and have established a 'whole horse' approach to every case.


olivia nugent


Olivia graduated from Melbourne University in 2005. Olivia started working with KEC not long after graduating, then had a period away and returned a few years later.

Since then she has had 3 lovely girls and only works 2 days a week with us. Olivia has a keen interest in equine reproduction and dentistry.Olivia doesn’t get much down time being a full time mum but when she does, she enjoys running and spending time with her family.

Luke Wells-Smith

Director and Veterinarian

Luke graduated from James Cook University’s Bachelor of Veterinary Science program in 2010. Luke’s area of veterinary interest is foot related lameness and he works as an equine veterinary podiatrist. Luke has worked in a number of equine veterinary practices throughout Australia. Luke helped to develop the Equine Podiatry and Lameness Centre in the Hunter Valley NSW and was a director from 2014-2016. He started his own consulting company in early 2017 - Motion Equine Podiatry Consulting. Luke serves as a consultant for veterinary hospitals, industry stakeholders and insurance companies. As of the 31st of August, Luke purchased Kilmore Equine Clinic from Dr Maxine Brain. Luke doesn’t get a lot of down time, but when he does he enjoys riding anything with two wheels (both motorised and pedal powered).


anita burke


Anita graduated from Murdoch University in Perth in 1999 and completed a year of mixed practice before joining Kilmore Equine Clinic in 2001. She has worked with horses most of her life and gets up extra early every morning to work Standardbred horses. Anita has built up a strong rapport and lifelong relationships with many of our clients and is an integral part of our team. Anita has a very kind, patient and calm demeanour and is often called upon to pass on her wide range of knowledge and skills to veterinary students and her colleges.


Esther Van Herwaarden


Esther graduated from the University of Ghent, Belgium,  in 2014. She worked in several equine clinics spread over the Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand where she gained experience working with equine specialists.  She is also involved with volunteer projects in Indonesia to improve the welfare of local horses.  Her interests include orthopaedics and internal medicine, especially foals. 

She grew up surrounded by animals and used to do a lot of showjumping. Outside of work she enjoys outdoor and social activities of all kinds.


Lynda Sheen

Practice Manager

Lynda joined our clinic in 2017 as practice manager. Previously Lynda worked for 15 years in a mixed animal practice as a vet nurse/practice manager before changing careers and working in administration for the Department of Education and Training for 7 years.  Lynda plays a key role in keeping the clinic running smoothly and maintaining our cottage garden.


Rachel Peake

Veterinary Nurse

Rachel first started working for KEC in July 2016 as a veterinary nurse. She then decided to broaden her experience at a Thoroughbred stud farm in Euroa before returning to our clinic in April 2018. Rachel is local to the area, has a friendly and outgoing personality, and willing to offer assistance whenever possible. Her background involves being part of the Thoroughbred industry for 7 years as a stud groom/yearling manager, working along side mares, foals, yearlings and racehorses. She has also spent time leading Thoroughbred yearlings through the major sale rings in Australia. In her spare time, Rachel enjoys dressage and eventing on her German riding pony cross ‘Angus’.

Georgina graduated from Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga 2018. She has grown up and lived on the family 100,000 acre cattle station in North Queensland. She has always been around horses and has handled, broke in and competed horses her whole life. Her favourite equine sports are Campdrafting, Challenges and Dressage. Her interests other than horses are poultry, cattle and sewing


Zoe Meyer

Veterinary Nurse

Zoe joined the team mid 2015 as a receptionist/ vet nurse. Zoe worked in a large mixed animal practice for 3 years before joining the team at KEC. Zoe finished her certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing in 2014. In her time at KEC Zoe has become an integral part of the team. Zoe welcomes all our clients in the front office with her bright, bubbly, friendly personality.
